There’s a version of music history that gets taught as a list of names, dates, and chart positions. It leaves out the part where the songs were often the only place an artist could say the true thing.

The blues, country, soul, punk, grunge — these are genres that grew up partly out of pressure. Songs about a mind that won’t settle. About the long night. About a body that’s tired in a way sleep doesn’t fix.

And America has always had a complicated relationship with that. We’ll buy the record. We’ll stream the song a hundred times. We’ll put the artist on a poster. What we’re slower to do is take seriously what they were telling us.

This blog is about that gap.

Ignore the Stigmas is a place to look at music history through the lens we usually keep off to the side: what artists were actually living with, what they wrote about it, and why the country that made them famous so rarely made room for them to be unwell in public.

We’ll follow threads through specific records and specific lives. We’ll look at the lyrics, the interviews, the silences. We’ll ask who got help and who didn’t, and what that says about who we decide deserves care.

None of this is about romanticizing suffering. The tortured artist is a convenient story because it lets us enjoy the work while doing nothing about the person. That story has cost us people.

It’s also not a diagnosis of anyone. We’re not here to posthumously label strangers. We’re here to listen to what they said, take it seriously, and ask why the listening tends to start only after it’s too late.

If there’s a thesis, it’s this: the music kept telling us. We kept changing the subject.

That’s the stigma. Not cruelty, mostly — just a long habit of looking away.

So this is where we stop looking away. One song at a time.
