The demon’s challenge
A demon steals into your loneliest loneliness and says it: “This life you now live, you will have to live again and again, exactly the same.”
The eternal hourglass is turned over again and again — “and you with it, speck of dust!” Nothing is new. Every pain and every joy will return.
It is not a cosmology but a test. Would you be crushed by the thought, or would you say that it was divine? Your gut reaction to the thought is the verdict on your life. It functions as a mirror, not a cosmology.
How to use it
Apply the test to your everyday choices: “Am I willing to repeat this exact moment forever?” The ‘no’ reveals, surgically, where you are not living authentically.
It is not despair or escapism. It forces you into the action that affirms life. Affirming the recurrence is the highest formula of amor fati — the love of fate.
The weight is not the suffering. It is the affirmation.
