The most misused idea in philosophy — an ideal of self-creation, not domination.
A bridge, not a super-being
“Man is a bridge and not an end; what can be loved in man is that he is a crossing.”
“Man is a rope stretched between the animal and the Overman — a rope over an abyss.”
It is a way of living, a direction of self-overcoming — not a race or a genetic destiny. It is not a superhero, a brute, or a master race: those are the corruptions. And it stands opposed to the ‘last man’ — the small, safe, blinking content being.
Translate it as Overman, not Superman.
How it got stolen
His sister Elisabeth — a nationalist antisemite — edited and rearranged his unpublished notes after his collapse. Nazi ideology then ripped the phrase out of context to justify race and domination.
But Nietzsche himself despised the nationalist herd, the antisemites, and the state. The real Übermensch is a personal challenge: “What have you done to overcome yourself?”
Take it personally: the Overman is a bridge, not a badge.
